"What's a teen to do?"
Q. |
"In response to a recent question I asked, you advised that I refrain from physical contact on a date. I am very confused on what dating as a teen is supposed to be like if you aren't supposed to engage in physical contact. I know that the Bible says not to think lustful thoughts, but if you are dating someone you're attracted to, won't these thoughts arise?" |
A. |
Yes... because we are human and have sinful natures you will have thoughts (lustful thoughts as you said) but you must let the Holy Spirit take those thoughts captive and abandon those sinful attitudes and thoughts immediately so that God will be pleased, and you will benefit spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically beyond measure! Being a Christian we are under the leadership, guidelines, and rules of God's Holy Word and continuous leading of the Holy Spirit. For every rule that God has commanded us to do – or not to do – He has given (and will continue to give) us the power to completely obey. We must continually submit ourselves to His will not our will. Primarily you must have a fixed mind that you are going to live your life according to what the Bible, God's Holy and Inspired Word, says and then you must ask God to give you creative ways to interact with your date in conversations, sports, concerts, going to the mall… etc. (We will be frequently adding fresh ideas to our website to help you and your friends with this.) Everything has an origin (beginning)... when you test the waters with continued physical contact and continue to think you can handle a little bit more each time you will find that emotions override knowledge and you find yourself in a place you know you should not be and you don't want to be there. Dating as a teen today can be very confusing without God. I have a challenge for you – try your very best to go against the normal life of a teenager in this dark world... the average teen watches over 44 hours of television a week [source: U.S. World and News] (this includes shows which dishonor our Creator and Heavenly Father: MTV, violence, soap operas (sex, relationships without God), situation comedies (upholding the gay lifestyle, swearing, making fun of righteous people) – have a goal to read the Bible each week for 44 hours instead. There is a very true statement in today's high tech world: “Garbage In – Garbage Out”... in scripture it is stated: "Whatever is in a man's heart – that is what he is." In other words, if you fill your mind with holy and righteous things – instead of trash – you will be pleasing God, and living according to His commandments will be much easier and actually a blast! The love and the blessings you receive from living a lifestyle (moment by moment with His power) pleasing to God is incomparable.
